Abstract
À l’instar de toute une série de portraits phototextuels de pays, la collection « Petite Planète » commence à être éditée par les Éditions du Seuil dans une période que Jean Fourastié a nommée les Trente Glorieuses, dans un contexte de développement du tourisme de masse et d’apparition du livre de poche moderne. La personnalité de son directeur — le jeune Chris Marker qui fait alors ses premiers pas dans le monde du livre, de la photographie et du cinéma —, son format de poche, l’originalité de ses couvertures, son accent sur le présent des pays étudiés et leur population, ou encore la recherche et l’expérimentation dans l’utilisation d’une illustration riche et abondante sont autant d’aspects qui font que « Petite Planète » va se démarquer, dès son lancement, des séries concurrentes et affirmer sa singularité dans le paysage éditorial francophone de l’époque.
