Abstract
Dans l’entre-deux-guerres, le genre éditorial du portrait de pays est encore en voie de constitution : il se cherche entre le reportage, la presse illustrée, l’écriture sérielle et le beau livre. Pour comprendre ce qui se joue entre les années 1920 et les années 1960, âge d’or de cette vogue éditoriale, et en particulier l’hybridation du portrait de territoire entre presse et livre, la trajectoire de Pierre Mac Orlan, écrivain polygraphe typique de cette époque, est idéale. L’article se penche sur la généalogie et les métamorphoses de ses écrits circonstanciels géographiques, comme ses textes sur la Tunisie, la Belgique, la Bretagne, Londres ou Hambourg, réunis dès 1929 dans Villes, sous-titré « Mémoires », ou encore Les Pays-Bas, livre photographique de 1965.
