Abstract
The chapter reconstructs the biography of Alberta Szalita, a Polish Jewish psychoanalyst born in 1910 in present-day Ukraine. The author employs the method of micro-storytelling to present Szalita’s life story in a nuanced and comprehensive manner, beyond simplifying labels of an “amazing story,” typically given to biographies of Holocaust survivors. Special attention is given to Szalita’s own experience of losing her entire family in the Shoah and her description of the grieving process and bereavement in her book Grief and Bereavement ( 1974 ). She was known in the US for her ability to build a connection with psychotic patients and with traumatized Holocaust survivors. The author points out Szalita’s contributions to psychoanalysis, her understanding of intuition, psychointegration, and psychoanalysis as a “thinking cure.”
