Abstract
En 1931, les Éditions Firmin-Didot publient La route de Paris à la Méditerranée. Le texte est confié à Paul Morand et les illustrations à plusieurs photographes, parmi lesquels Germaine Krull, qui réalise la majorité des images. L’ouvrage décrit la route entre Paris et la Côte d’Azur en mettant à l’honneur plusieurs stations étapes. À travers la description géographique, historique et des habitudes de vie des habitants de ces lieux d’intérêt, l’ouvrage propose un portrait de la France davantage qu’un récit de voyage. L’automobile qui est utilisée par l’auteur et la photographe pour relier la capitale à Nice conditionne leur voyage, tout comme le récit et les images qui en sont faites. À partir de l’analyse de La route de Paris à la Méditerranée, nous verrons que le voyage est prétexte à dresser un portrait phototextuel de pays et que la technique automobile et photographique influence fortement la réalisation de ce portrait.
