Abstract
Abstract Revisionist scholarly interest in silent cinema has now lasted longer than the silent era itself. This introductory chapter offers an overview of that scholarship, the better to see how silent film research positions itself today. It considers how historical research into film’s early years first emerged out of debates and disputes within the context of 1970s film studies; it explores how the concept of “modernity” subsequently provided a framework for silent film scholars in the 1990s and 2000s to bridge the concerns of film history and film theory; and it sketches the implications of the recent material turn in the humanities for silent film scholarship. It concludes by advocating a comparative media approach to film historiography, for which the emphasis falls on relations among media forms, technologies, and institutions as frameworks for historical analysis.
