Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses upon three stained glass windows that depict Paradise Lost. Dating from 1927–31, they were designed for buildings at the University of New Brunswick in Canada and Princeton University and Geneva College in the United States. While portraits of Milton in stained glass are numerous, as also illustrations of his works in various artistic media, representations of his works in stained glass are extremely rare, albeit spectacular. This chapter explores how the meaning and individuality of these three windows, works of architectural art, result from particular artistic execution as well as distinct architectural, social, cultural, and historical contexts. In so doing, Sherry attempts to identify what is lost and, more importantly, what is gained in these vitreous translations of Paradise Lost.
