Abstract
Abstract This chapter illustrates the concept of cultural series, as a means of thinking about early film history in particular and how media culture works in general. Although frequently invoked in the research landscape today as a way of making distinctions that would be difficult to establish otherwise, the notion of a cultural series has prompted a great deal of uncertainty and ambiguity regarding its applications and uses. After tracing the origin and evolution of the concept, the chapter offers an overview of the hermeneutic potential of cultural series when entrusted with the mission of putting various media “elements” (be they technological, aesthetic, cultural, etc.) into relationships that go beyond essentialized media and cultural identities.
