Abstract
Artykuł skupia się na instytucjach zakorzenionych w polskim życiu wiejskim, które Niemcy włączyli jako najniższy poziom administracyjny w okupowanej Polsce w latach 1939–1945. Autor określa te instytucje jako kluczowe elementy poziomu mezo wpływające na zachowanie jednostek. Osią analizy jest postać sołtysa. Autor wykazuje, że wiejski system bezpieczeństwa w połączeniu z wprowadzeniem odpowiedzialności zbiorowej i groźby przemocy leżał u podstaw procesu kształtującego społeczność, w którym sołtysi w nieunikniony sposób musieli odgrywać istotną rolę. W tej nowej dynamice odpowiedzialności problemy „wspólnoty” i „przynależności” ewoluowały względem kwestii „bezpieczeństwa” i „przetrwania” w zmieniających się okolicznościach okupacyjnego życia. Stworzony w tym wojennym tyglu nowy obraz społeczności składał się z przekształconych tożsamości, wyraźnych kategorii etnicznych, nowych więzi społecznych i nowych antagonizmów. Zbiorowe podejście biograficzne do sołtysów w tym okresie wnosi nade wszystko zbiorowy dylemat etyczny jako kategorię analizy historycznej. Artykuł opiera się w głównej mierze na zeznaniach złożonych podczas tzw. procesów sierpniowych, gdy sądzono osoby oskarżone o kolaborację, pochodzące z historycznych ziem Galicji Zachodniej albo dystryktu krakowskiego Generalnego Gubernatorstwa. Zastosowano gęsty opis zjawiska, tak by narracje osobiste rzutowały na szerszy obraz badanych procesów społecznych.
