Abstract
Coordination ( syndetic, polysyndetic, asyndetic) in the English sentence by the conjunction "and', "or' , "but', or by simple punctuation, be it the coordination of clauses, of phrases, or of words is a keystone in the construction of text. Several facets of this syntactic process - ellipsis, joint coordination or segregatory coordination thus become raw material that go into the making of a textual edifice. A study of these different facets will enable us to explain why and how a literary or narratological interpretation, which sometimes seems farfetched, compared to the surface text , is completely coherent. Working particularly closely with a short story, "Friend of My Youth", by the Canadian Author Alice Munro we will see how the ambiguity of the links set up by and through coordination function like way-marks guiding through the text. Not only does his ambiguity enable us to borrow unsuspected paths, it enables us to discover the multifarious dimensions of a literary text. Our aim is to try and show how a linguistic analysis of coordinate structures can constitute the first step in the explanation of a text, clearing the way for the literary critic to carry on and interpret it.
