Abstract
Canadian cinema is a rich site for research into representations of children. This chapter will explore representations of Indigenous children from the earliest ethnographic films of Harlan I. Smith in the 1920s, to the expansive documentary oeuvre of Alanis Obomsawin, whose groundbreaking films highlight Indigenous stories for the National Film Board of Canada from the 1970s to the present. Working in different parts of the country, with different positional and ideological lenses, the authors discuss how these stories reinforce notions of national identity in suggestive ways. Using close readings of these two directors’ bodies of work spanning 100 years, they seek to describe how children act as vital sites of national identity and projection, and what this means for conceptions of children more broadly.
