Abstract
Salah satu tipe rumah tradisional di Sumatera Selatan adalah Rumah Ulu banyak ditemui di dataran tinggi dan pegunungan di Kab. Muara Enim khususnya Desa Pulau Panggung, Kec. Semende Darat Laut,. Rumah ini memiliki karakter rumah tradisional berupa rumah panggung (bangunan rumah kayu yang ditopang oleh beberapa tiang kayu atau batang pohon secara utuh). Saat ini, Rumah Ulu/Semendo telah mengalami banyak perubahan dari sisi arsitektur, yakni perubahan material dan perubahan fungsi ruangan. Hal yang paling mencolok adalah banyaknya kolong rumah Ulu/Semendo telah berubah fungsi menjadi ruang tamu, garasi ataupun sebagai tempat berjualan. Perubahan-perubahan ini terjadi dengan sangat signifikan sehingga pada masa sekarang, Rumah Ulu asli sudah sangat sulit untuk ditemukan utuh. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui perubahan material dan fungsi ruang pada rumah Ulu/Semendo di Kecamatan Semende Darat Laut. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif. Metode pengambilan data dilakukan dengan cara in-depth interview, dokumentasi, dan observasi lapangan. Hasil penelitian yang ditemukan adalah Rumah Ulu/Semendo berangsur-angsur mengalami perubahan dari segi material dan fungsi ruang. Saat ini sangat sulit untuk menemukan Rumah Ulu/Semendo yang masih asli. Perubahan-perubahan ini sangat dipengaruhi sulitnya menemukan bahan material asli sehingga masyarakat harus mensubsitusi dengan bahan material lain. Selain itu, perubahan ini juga terjadi dikarenakan, masyarakat di daerah Semendo memiliki kebutuhan-kebutuhan tambahan akan sarana dan prasarana seperti dapur, toilet, dan sebagainya. Pada akhirnya, lambat laun, Rumah Ulu/Semendo akan mulai hilang dan tidak dapat ditemukan lagi.
