Abstract
Au-delà du récit d’apparence assertive prenant la défense de la classe ouvrière canadienne-française, Bonheur d’occasion mérite d’être revisité pour y voir un exercice d’exploration des réalités sociales. Plutôt que de s’en prendre aux classes dominantes, Gabrielle Roy chercherait à comprendre les conditions de vie des groupes dominés qu’elle représente dans son roman. Son livre donne ainsi à voir la pauvreté à travers un regard toujours empathique, certes, mais prudent en ce qui a trait à l’idéologie. Autant du point de vue narratif que stylistique, on peut déceler des stratégies d’atténuation du discours critique qui protègent l’intégrité de l’autrice pendant qu’elle prend le parti de la justice sociale.
