Abstract
With the accomplishments of victory often go the challenges of occupation.This volume, proceedings of the Ninth Military History Symposium, held at the Royal Military College of Canada at Kingston, gathers together critical discussions of different armies of occupation, ranging from the eighteenth-century Canadian experience-the British occupation of New France-to the French occupation of the Sudan, to the German occupation of Poland and Norway.The essays shed much light on both the history of warfare and conquest and on present political realities.For instance, to what extent are Warsaw Pact countries subject to real occupation even now?To what extent are certain contemporary alliances the result of occupation army policies in the past?What events shaped the attitudes of the conquered to the victors, both initially and in the long term?The volume will be of great interest to military historians.The applications are much broader, however, for these far-ranging discussions illuminate issues in political science, modern history, and race relations.
