Abstract
O presente texto pretende identificar e definir os quadros cronológicos evolutivos da Torre do Tombo, primeiro como Arquivo da Coroa e depois como Arquivo Nacional, apresentando uma análise de legislação oficial promulgada entre o século XVI e o ano de 2012 pelos sucessivos órgãos de soberania. Para tal foram definidos cinco grandes contextos: Entre os finais da Idade Média e o ocaso do Antigo Regime: o rei, o despacho e o arquivo da Coroa (séc. XVI-1820); A transformação imposta pela Monarquia Constitucional: o Arquivo Nacional (1820-1910); A I República: centralização e descentralização (1910-1926); A Ditadura Militar e o Estado Novo (1926-1974); e Do 25 de Abril aos nossos dias: presente e futuro de um Arquivo Nacional (1974-2012). É nosso objectivo fixar e caracterizar de forma sintética os diversos enquadramentos político-administrativos da instituição e, sobretudo, contextualizar a evolução das suas funções e actividades, as quais são determinantes para compreender as formas de produção da informação, de incorporação e a história custodial dos fundos documentais que actualmente tem à sua guarda.
