Abstract
Kijâtai-Alexandra Veillette-Cheezo is a filmmaker and journalist based in Montreal, descended from a Québécois mother and an Anishinaabe father. Their short films speak to Indigenous realities in Canada from a personal point of view, weaving together political concerns with their singular point of view. Interested in taking on all roles in the production of a film, they use self-representation as a way to connect with others; talking about their own experience is, for them, a way to open up dialogue by touching people’s hearts. Also an activist, and passionate about journalism, Kijâtai-Alexandra uses words and images to create bridges between communities, to support their Indigenous peers, and to stop the erasure of their culture in the context of colonial violence. By using a DIY approach to filmmaking, they offer a touching and unique window through which audiences from diverse backgrounds can relate to and take responsibility for how to support Indigenous struggles.
