Abstract
Lo-fi audiovisual works by Kainai artist Terrance Houle, such as Isstahpikssi (ghost), Wagon Burner , and Landscape , enact the Kainai creation story through their offerings of the play of light on the screen, achieved by Houle’s use of Super 8 film. These works summon the sensorial dynamics of the Ghost Dance movement. Beat, tempo, and embodiment characterize the somatic dimensions of the work across the bodies of performers, artist, his family, community collaborators, as well as his audience. By activating bodies of difference in his portrayal of scenes of racialized trauma and healing in various dance milieus and scenes, Houle occasions vulnerability as what Frankfurt School-engaged theorist Estelle Ferrarese calls an emergent voice of “subject, relation, and world,” prefiguring the possibility for what Cree-Métis-Saulteaux scholar Jas Morgan calls “being as kinship.”
