Abstract
Cet article analyse les représentations de l’Inquisition dans l’Histoire des tromperies des prestres et des moines de l’Église romaine (1693), rédigée sous forme de lettres par le protestant Gabriel d’Emiliane dans le cadre d’un voyage en Italie, puis traduite depuis l’anglais. Ce curieux ouvrage, autour duquel plusieurs doutes et interrogations subsistent, se présente comme un anti-pèlerinage où l’auteur s’éloigne spirituellement de l’Église romaine alors qu’il se rapproche physiquement de son cœur névralgique et qu’il est confronté à la cruauté de l’Inquisition, véritable pierre angulaire du discours anticatholique de l’auteur. En étudiant attentivement la place de l’Inquisition tout au long du texte, en remettant en cause certain de ses postulats et en jouant avec les échelles d’analyse, il s’agira ici de replacer cet ouvrage dans la tradition protestante dans laquelle il s’insère tout en montrant comment s’opère le système de représentations de l’Inquisition d’un huguenot réfugié en Angleterre.
