Abstract
The construction and assembly of microwave photonic systems require the use of diverse optoelectronic and photonic components. This chapter provides a summarized description of the main optical devices that are employed in microwave photonics systems including the operation principles and most common configurations. It briefly reviews the fundamental operation principles of optical sources and detectors based on the interaction mechanisms between radiation and matter, the specialization of these principles to semiconductor materials and the basic structures, equations and parameters of optical sources, and detectors and modulators. A Fiber Bragg Grating is a periodic or almost a periodic perturbation of the refractive index along the fiber length which is formed by exposure of the core to an intense optical interference pattern. The Array Waveguide Gratings is a device that uses an array of integrated optic waveguides to perform the same function as a free space diffraction grating.
