Abstract

Cancer genetics clinics continue to face increased demands for genetic testing (GT) due to various factors such as increased patient and physician awareness, increased utility of GT in cancer treatment, and expanding testing criteria. The older genetics model, where a genetic counselor meets with the patient one-on-one for both pre- and post-test counselling, has led to extreme wait times and, inevitably, sub-optimal patient care. Mainstreaming is an updated model where non-genetics clinicians (ie, oncologists) order GT for select patients, with genetics professionals involved only for the results disclosure.
