Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This paper seeks to explore the concept of colourization of black and white photographs as a form of reflexive remix. Colourized photographs call into question notions of the authentic and the “spectacular aura,” nostalgia, pastiche, and tradition. Such colourization is subject to controversy: some argue it honours the original photograph through its efforts to be historically accurate, while others argue it degrades the original. However, colourized photographs present a new expression worthy of consideration because they can capture experiences and emotions differently. In particular, the process of deconstruction and reconstruction through technologies such as artificial intelligence can create something unique that is perhaps missing from the original. As a remix, the colourization of black and white photographs makes the viewer question what they feel, how they perceive, and how they view history.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
