Abstract
Utilization of broad-based genetic testing methodologies such as exome sequencing (ES) has allowed for the identification of cohorts of individuals with rare variants, including copy number variants (CNVs). Professional guidelines and consensus statements support ES as a first line test. The diagnostic utility of ES has been shown to be significantly greater than chromosomal microarray (CMA). However, clinicians may still be reluctant to shift their ordering workflow from CMA to ES as a first-line test, given that some CNVs are not detected by ES methodology.
