Abstract
Si la France possède déjà quelques comptoirs commerciaux sur le continent africain dès le XVIIe siècle, il faut attendre la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle avant qu’elle ne mette en branle une politique résolument colonialiste. Avec la Conférence de Berlin comme marqueur, le "partage de l’Afrique" systématique et organisé semble de plus en plus concret en 1885. L’Afrique Occidentale Française (AOF), une colonie rassemblant les territoires sous domination française dans l’Ouest africain, est officiellement créée en 1895, et est suivie de près par l’Afrique Équatoriale Française (AEF), fondée en 1910. Ces deux colonies de masse englobent donc l’essentiel des territoires français en Afrique continentale, à l’exception des protectorats du Maroc et de la Tunisie, ainsi que de la colonie de peuplement de l’Algérie.
