Entre 1958 et 1984, la Guinée est marquée par une période de dictature révolutionnaire. À la tête de celle-ci se trouve Ahmed Sékou Touré, appuyé par le Parti Démocratique de Guinée (PDG). Le régime révolutionnaire use de violence et de coercition envers l’ensemble des Guinéens, mais surtout ceux qu’il perçoit comme ses ennemis. À la suite du débarquement des Portugais en Guinée en novembre 1970, il y a une radicalisation de la répression. Alors que la Guinée semble cloisonnée du fait de la scission avec la France, la communauté internationale sait peu de choses sur ce qui se passe en Guinée. Cette situation va cependant évoluer à partir de 1970 qui marque un tournant répressif suite au débarquement des Portugais jusqu’au début des années 1980 pour inclure les premiers témoignages de victimes.
