Abstract
Au XIXe siècle, les explorations se multiplient en Afrique1. En plus de la connaissance géographique et ethnologique du continent africain, il fallait trouver de nouvelles débouchées commerciales afin d’écouler la production toujours croissante de l’industrie. Les téméraires qui bravent les sentiers et climats agressifs sont accueillis en héros à leur retour. Invités par les sociétés savantes, ils produisent des écrits et/ou prononcent des conférences pour relater leurs exploits. Dans la colonie du Sénégal, un homme comprend l’importance des explorations pour l’administration et met en place des conditions qui les rendent possibles. Cet homme est le général Faidherbe.
