Abstract
Le Manuel tactique pour le groupe de l’AOF de 1910 est une synthèse des savoirs militaires pour l’Afrique occidentale française (AOF) et permet aux officiers de se familiariser avec les conditions particulières de la fédération. Les considérations derrière sa création sont d’ordre internes et touchent avant tout à des enjeux de maintien de l’ordre spécifique à des territoires "pacifiés" ou en voie de l’être. Suivant une tendance implantée dans le savoir-faire colonial depuis la conquête de l’Algérie, les populations colonisées déjà pacifiées et à pacifier sont soumises à l’examen afin d’outiller l’officier avec un savoir vulgarisé qui lui permettra d’agir sur le territoire. Conquérant, occupant et commandant, l’officier se trouve dans un monde qu’il doit comprendre et organiser afin de le pacifier et d’y maintenir l’ordre. Ce manuel permet aussi de mieux comprendre ce que les autorités entendent par la "pacification". Il illustre surtout l’importance de la racialisation dans les pratiques de maintien de l’ordre.
