Abstract
James Petras (b. January, 17 1937 - ) is Bartle Professor (Emeritus) of Sociology at Binghamton University and an Adjunct Professor at Saint Mary's University in Canada. Petras spent his entire academic career at Binghamton University, where he specialized in Development Studies, Latin America and the Caribbean, revolutionary movements, and class analysis. During his career, he received the Western Political Science Association's Best Dissertation Award (1968), the American Sociological Association's Career Distinguished Service Award (Marxist Sociology Section), and the Kenny Award for Best Book on Labor Studies (2002). He was an early and prominent member of the Caucus for a New Political Science. Petras is the author of more than 60 books published in 29 languages, and over 600 articles in professional journals In retirement, Petras continues to engage the politics of capitalist development, imperialism, and the class struggle as a non-university affiliated activist scholar.
