My heartfelt condolences to his wife, Carol, and his family during this difficult time. Mike was not only a mentor but also a beacon of guidance throughout my professional journey, and his absence is profoundly felt.My first encounter with Mike dates back to 1994, during my fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Inviting him to speak about aerosol therapy was a turning point in my career. From that moment on, he became a source of inspiration and unwavering support. Mike's wisdom and kindness were unparalleled, making every encounter with him pleasurable.Throughout the years, Mike generously shared his extensive knowledge of aerosols with me, profoundly shaping my understanding of the subject. In our first collaboration,1 we both conducted one of the first reviews about the efficacy of providing inhaled medications by metered-dose inhalers and accessory devices (MDIs/ADs) to children with acute asthma compared with the current standard of care, small-volume nebulizers (SVNs).Our conclusion supported the effectiveness of MDIs/ADs as first-line treatment in acute childhood asthma. Considering the clinical benefits, safety, cost-effectiveness, reduced personnel time, and faster and simpler administration compared to SVNs, we recommended that MDIs/ADs be prioritized as the preferred treatment method for children with acute asthma.Another early collaboration resulted in a seminal article published in Pediatrics in 2001.2 In that article, Mike and I showed that the facemask seal to the child's face is critical for efficient aerosol delivery to infants and young children, and this should be stressed to parents. Ever since, this notion has significantly influenced pediatric practice worldwide, emphasizing the importance of a proper facemask seal for efficient aerosol delivery to infants and young children.Mike's innovative spirit was exemplified by his groundbreaking development of the aerochamber, a valved holding chamber that revolutionized aerosol delivery for patients of all ages. The aerochamber was a game changer for children, adults, and even horses…I remember that he always insisted that we distinguish between a "spacers" and a "valved holding chamber" (VHC), a spacer with low-resistance one-way valves. His dedication to improving patient care and his passion for innovation inspired me as a pediatric pulmonologist to think creatively and develop new ideas in aerosol medicine for pediatric patients.Our collaboration evolved into a strong and strategic partnership. In 1997, we coauthored a patent on inserting a pacifier into an aerosol mask ("SootherMask") for infants and young children. Despite his specialization in treating adults, Mike always shared delightful anecdotes about real-life experiments with his kids and grandkids, serving as the foundation for the soothermask's early trials. His artistic talents extended beyond the professional realm as I marveled at his drawings and the beautiful bronze sculptures he proudly displayed during my visits to his home.After patent approval, Mike continued to assist me during the research and development stages of the soothermask. These were incredible years, marked by emails, phone calls, and occasional face-to-face meetings at conferences—always cherished moments, regardless of the distance.Our connection strengthened when I spent 6 years in Edmonton, Canada, accompanying my wife, Dorit, on her doctoral journey. Being closer to Mike brought immense joy, and our conversations spanned professional and personal aspects of our lives. Visiting Mike in his summer vacation home in Sanibel, Florida, was a highlight, witnessing the warmth of our relationship.Upon our return to Israel in 2019, we collaborated on a groundbreaking article at the onset of the pandemic, highlighting the potential risks of infection transmission through nebulizers.3 This seminal piece became a cornerstone in our field and was cited extensively in the following years.Mike and I coauthored >40 publications,4 a testament to our fruitful collaboration despite never having worked in the same laboratory or hospital and being geographically distant from each other.Unfortunately, recent times saw Mike facing illness, and regrettably, I was not able to maintain regular contact. The news of his passing has left a void that cannot be filled.Mike's impact on my life, both professionally and personally, was immeasurable.
