Personal Characteristics and Competencies as Correlates of Intercultural Transitional Adjustment Among US and Canadian Sojourners in Ireland

Abstract
Drawing upon self-report data generated from a postal survey of US and Canadian expatriates in Ireland and following the established argument that expatriate transitional adjustment is best viewed as a multifaceted construct encompassing work, general, interaction, and overall adjustment, we test the extent to which personal characteristics and competencies predict adjustment in these different life domains of international assignees. While gender, marital status, age, and education fail to reach statistical significance, personal competencies show stronger correlations with felt adjustment. Empathy skills, stress reduction skills, and interaction skills were all significantly positively correlated with all the facets of transitional adjustment measured. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
