Abstract
The exponential growth of the amount of ISO management systems and the upcoming launch of a new standard on corporate social responsiveness represent opportunities for organizations to promote their social legitimacy and to implement the main concepts of sustainable development through internationally recognized systems. Thus, ISO management systems now cover the main facets of this concept, which proposes to find, at an international level, a balance between economic, environmental, and social issues. Nevertheless, the generalization of these standards and their possible use for promoting sustainability call for major questioning, especially for southern countries. Indeed, by their cultural and economic specificities, organizations from these countries remain a priori relatively impervious to the formalist proposals of ISO management systems. This imperviousness is reflected in the international distribution of the amount of certified organizations, which shows a clear gap between northern and southern countries. This paper proposes to analyze the stakes of the generalization of these standards by showing their pertinence and their limits to promote the concept of sustainable development, especially in southern countries.
