Abstract
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, the former communist countries have experienced huge transformations. Although the transition has not been smooth, and there have been some snags and backsliding, few people today doubt that the transformation is heading towards a capitalist system. After going through economic transition, many European countries have begun a phase of economic integration, with an objective of becoming members of the European Union (EU). Although integration has begun, the transition is still not finished. Yet, the subject seems to draw less interest. There is a relative drought of information regarding transition, when compared to the flood at the beginning of the process.
