Près de trente ans après la fin du régime d’apartheid, la démocratie sud-africaine apparaît autant fragilisée que pleine de ressources : le parti au pouvoir depuis 1994, l’ANC, connaît de fortes tensions internes et doit faire face à une remise en cause croissante de son hégémonie et de ses orientations politiques. Si les institutions du pays apparaissent solides, la corruption et les inégalités sociales demeurent des maux qui affectent profondément la vie politique. Dans le même temps, les nombreuses mobilisations populaires et un débat public permanent constituent les signes d’une incontestable vivacité démocratique .
