Abstract

This paper presents a detailed analytical discussion of Herma (1961) for solo piano by Iannis Xenakis. The model of the work as a set-theoretic demonstration, advanced in the writings of the composer, is discussed. A statistical analysis reveals numerous inconsistencies between the published score and this model. The aesthetic consequences of these are explored, and an attempt is made to develop an alternative understanding of the music as it is perceived by listeners in terms of temporal gestalt formation.
