Abstract
Considérant la prévalence élevée des troubles de santé mentale au Québec, il est primordial de procéder à une évaluation holistique des patients afin d’éviter une mauvaise interprétation de leur présentation clinique. Évaluer l’état mental et l’état physique de manière fragmentée pourrait causer des erreurs dans l’interprétation des signes et symptômes manifestés par le patient. Cet article vise donc à outiller les infirmières d’urgence face à l’évaluation et à la prise en charge d’une personne présentant des symptômes s’apparentant à ceux d’une condition de santé mentale ou à un problème de santé mentale établi. L’article abordera des principes liés à l’évaluation de la condition physique et mentale, l’évaluation du risque suicidaire, les principes importants associés à la médication présentant un risque, la consommation, la prévention de la violence et la surveillance requise. À la fin de cet article, un outil clinique est offert aux infirmières afin de les aider à structurer leurs évaluations et leurs interventions face à une clientèle présentant une condition de santé mentale à l’urgence.
