Abstract
Certaines personnes voient en 1984, le dernier roman crit par George Orwell avant sa mort, une sorte de testament littraire. Par ailleurs, nombre d'tudes tendent dmontrer que 1984 n'est pas un simple roman de science-fiction, mais un trs srieux avertissement de l'auteur contre le totalitarisme. Qu'en est-il exactement? Orwell considrait-il 1984 comme une prophtie ou comme une vision foudroyante de la situation mondiale au dbut de la guerre froide? Si l'auteur considrait luimme 1984 comme un cri d'alarme lanc contre la monte du totalitarisme, cela infirme-t-il l'hypothse selon laquelle 1984 est une oeuvre prophtique? 1984 constitue-t-il un roman original, particulier, dans l'oeuvre abondante de George Orwell, ou bien, sans le considrer comme une oeuvre autobiographique, ne peut-on y voir l'aboutissement de toute la conception orwellienne du socialisme?
