Abstract
Array of Long Baseline Antennas for Taking Radio Observations from Seventy-ninth parallel (ALBATROS) is an under-development interferometric radio telescope that aims to map the sky between 5–30 MHz with few-arcminute resolution-an order-of-magnitude improvement over existing sky-maps in this band. High-resolution maps will allow us to accurately characterize Galactic emission, thus taking the first steps towards detecting cosmic dark ages, and improving our understanding of the astrophysics of the local universe. To minimize contamination from electromagnetic interference of human origin, ALBATROS array is being installed at the Axel Heiberg island (79.8° N, 91.3° W), a radio-quiet location in the Canadian high-Arctic, and has the longest planned baseline of ~20 km to achieve the required resolution. Between 2018 and 2023, ALBATROS operated a 3-antenna array with a maximum baseline of ~3 km at Marion Island (46.9° S, 37.3° E), a radio-quiet location in the sub-Antarctic region. A third, year-round operational array, presently comprising two antennas, has been deployed at Uapishka station (51.5° N, 68.2° W) near Manicouagan reservoir in Quebec, which functions as a testbed for development and reliability testing.
