Abstract

The Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio transient Detector (CHORD) is a next-generation radio telescope scheduled to observe over the next decade at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) near Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. With a focus on redundancy and systematic control, CHORD will observe across a 300–1500 MHz bandwidth with a core of 512 six-meter dishes and two out-rigger sites equipped with 64 six-meter dishes to enable <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\lesssim 10$</tex> mas localization of radio transients. CHORD is expected to make significant improvements in intensity mapping with the 21-cm signal and the detection of fast radio bursts (FRBs), developing novel technologies while building upon key design aspects that enabled the successes of the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME).
