De nombreuses images et caricatures gravées ou lithographiées ont été réalisées lors du premier siège de Paris par les Prussiens, puis sous la Commune de Paris, pendant l’automne et l’hiver de 1870-1871. D’abord publiées dans des revues satiriques, elles ont largement circulé, achetées à l’unité, affichées sur les murs de Paris, dans les vitrines des magasins, puis (ré)éditées en séries et rassemblées dans des albums.
