Abstract
La mort brutale de Molière en février 1673 a empêché le dramaturge de superviser non seulement l’édition de sa dernière pièce mais également le travail de polissage d’un texte resté partiellement à l’état brut au moment de sa création. Pour répondre aux attentes des lecteurs, impatients de lire la dernière comédie de Molière, deux éditions pirates parurent en 1674, suivies d’une édition autorisée par Armande Béjart en 1675. Mais en 1682, c’est un texte en partie modifié et augmenté qui fut publié dans le tome 8 des Œuvres complètes de Molière. Plusieurs passages, dont la grande scène entre Argan et Béralde, y avaient été réécrits. C’est cette édition, due à l’intervention d’une main extérieure à Molière, qui a été considérée jusqu’en 2010 comme l’édition de référence de la pièce et qui a fait le lit d’une interprétation biographique en grande partie fantasmée faisant du Malade imaginaire l’œuvre-testament d’un homme qui se sait condamné.
