Abstract
En partant d’une thèse de Montpellier soutenue en 1723, qui assimile explicitement la maladie imaginaire à la mélancolie et amènera Boissier de Sauvages à créer en 1763 la catégorie nosologique de « melancholia argantis », on remonte à la constance de la pathologie de l’humeur noire qui se devine en transparence des cinq cas de maladies feintes ou illusoires incarnées sur la scène de Molière, entre Le Médecin volant et Le Malade imaginaire. C’est l’occasion d’interroger la plasticité non seulement esthétique et intellectuelle, mais tout autant nosologique et pathologique de ce concept malléable qui guidait alors les intuitions et les certitudes de la pensée savante sur les relations de l’esprit et du corps, de la raison et de la folie, de la santé et de la maladie. On tente de dégager l’usage que Molière en a fait pour l’anatomie des égarements comiques dans le cadre de son esthétique du ridicule, singulièrement dans Le Malade imaginaire.
