Abstract
En el presente trabajo se discuten algunos aspectos metodológicos relacionados a la identificación de las plantas en un documento histórico jesuítico. El mismo está constituido por la segunda parte (Botánica) del “Paraguay Natural Ilustrado” de José Sánchez Labrador (S. J.). Empleando el enfoque etnobotánico histórico, y partiendo de tres situaciones diferentes del autor frente a las plantas, se pretende problematizar aquellos aspectos a tener en cuenta al momento de identificar las plantas de esta obra enciclopédica publicada en 1772, en Ravenna (Italia). En la primera de ellas, Sánchez Labrador se posiciona como “etnobotánico”, relevando conocimientos indígenas sobre plantas prácticamente desconocidas para el “mundo occidental”. En otra situación, se realza el rol del jesuita como experimentador, poniendo en juego sus sentidos y su propio cuerpo al sentir reacciones muchas veces indeseadas. Finalmente, se explora sus aportes como “constructor” de categorías etnotaxonómicas y complejos vegetales a partir de la similitud (morfológica, organoléptica, etc.) entre plantas nativas y aquellas tratadas en las obras de escritores antiguosy en enciclopedias europeas de los siglos XVII y XVIII.
