Abus émotionnels et diffusion de l’identité à l’adolescence : implication du fonctionnement réflexif

Les conséquences négatives des abus émotionnels sur le développement psychosocial, dont les capacités de mentalisation (soit de réfléchir en termes d’états mentaux), sont bien documentées. Cependant, on en connait moins sur le lien entre les abus émotionnels et la formation de l’identité, un processus considéré important à l’adolescence. La présente étude vise donc (a) à observer si la mentalisation médie le lien entre les abus émotionnels et la diffusion de l'identité (DI), et (b) à explorer les différences entre les sexes quant au niveau de DI. Pour ce faire, un échantillon de 351 adolescents de la communauté et âgés de 12 à 17 ans a complété des mesures autorapportées portant sur les abus émotionnels, la DI et la mentalisation. En contrôlant pour l’âge et le sexe, la mentalisation médie la relation entre les abus émotionnels et la DI. Autrement dit, les abus émotionnels affecteraient négativement les capacités de mentalisation, ce qui mènerait à davantage de DI. De plus, les adolescents de sexe féminin ont des niveaux significativement plus élevés de DI que ceux de sexe masculin. Ainsi, les conclusions tirées de l’étude supportent les interventions faisant la promotion de la mentalisation pour favoriser l’intégration de l’identité chez les adolescents.
