“There Was Death in the Powder and He Knew It”: Dis/ability and Tactics of Resistance in the Autobiography of Elizabeth Storie

Abstract
In this article, Graham Lai and Nelson analyze The Autobiography of Elizabeth Storie (1859), an undertheorized text that uncovers the life story of a disabled, working-class Scottish woman. The authors contend that Storie’s autobiography should be interpreted as a “knowledge project” because it reveals truths about the intersectional nature of women’s identity and oppression in Victorian Scotland. Moreover, it is a repository of extra-textual and textual tactics that Storie deployed in order to resist discrimination based on class, gender, and dis/ability. Graham Lai and Nelson demonstrate that Storie’s autobiography is an account of the ways in which nineteenth-century medical, legal, and ecclesiastical systems often failed vulnerable members of society and how Storie’s “knowledge project” and drive for change is not only informed by class but also by her gendered and dis/abled consciousness.
