Данный текст представляет собой вступительную статью к переводу на русский язык ответа англиканского священника Джонаса Проста на английское издание «Письма о толерантности» Джона Локка. Тексты Проста ранее не переводились на русский язык, хотя их влияние как на позднейшие политические тексты самого Локка, так и на современную интерпретацию локкианского обоснования терпимости широко признаны и обсуждаются в обширной вторичной литературе. Именно в полемике с Простом написаны второе, третье и незавершенное по причине смерти четвертое письмо Локка о толерантности, значительно превосходящие по объему исходный текст и уточняющие многие акценты, оставшиеся непроясненными в первом письме. Прост проводит решительную атаку на утверждение о том, что внешняя сила не может помочь формированию искреннего убеждения в истине, а потому не оправдана в целях спасения души — так называемый аргумент от убеждения (argument from belief) Локка. С точки зрения Проста, ни отсутствие прямого подчинения убеждения воле, ни понимание обязанностей правителя на основании естественных интересов его подданных не отменяют права разумного применения силы правителем для защиты религиозной истины — напротив, требуют этого применения как необходимого средства для основополагающего интереса каждого человека в спасении собственной души. Вниманию читателей предлагается перевод первого текста, написанного Простом в полемике, а также вступительная статья об основных темах полемики в целом, с отдельным акцентом на том, как в ее свете предстает, и в каких уточнениях может нуждаться argument from belief. В то же время автор подчеркивает, что статус этого аргумента является далеко не единственной, а возможно, не самой главной, интересной или актуальной ставкой в споре Локка и Проста.
