Abstract
Balzac définit une poétique de la critique. Celle-ci doit être une pensée de la littérature, une réflexion permanente sur elle. Elle est donc un art littéraire de plein droit. Balzac, critique de sa propre création, se prononce aussi sur ses aspects les plus divers tant dans ses romans que dans la correspondance, laquelle devient ainsi une véritable œuvre autour de l’œuvre, qu’elle commente. Le romancier met en scène une conception de la littérature, souvent par contraste, parfois par projection, mais dans tous les cas c’est la dignité et la mission mêmes de la littérature qui sont en cause. Être critique implique de se faire anti-critique, car être critique c’est défendre la littérature moderne.
