Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The level at which snow accumulation and melt impacts streamflow varies from one catchment to another. The main objective of this research was to improve the accounting of snow influences in lumped precipitation-runoff models, by developing simple, parsimonious and general tools to efficiently simulate discharge at the outlet of catchments heavily or lowly influenced by snow processes. Our work was based on a set of 380 catchments spread over four countries (Canada, France, Sweden and Switzerland) and on systematic tests of ideas proposed in the literature. We focused on two main issues. On the one hand, we developed a spatialization method for estimating model input data (precipitation and air temperature) at the catchment scale. On the other hand, we developed a new snow accumulation and melt routine to account for the dynamics of snow at the catchment scale and to improve the quality of discharge simulations. \nThe results of the spatialization method highlighted the usefulness of introducing altitude corrections to estimate precipitation and air temperature fields in zones with strong relief. Besides, the comparison of this approach with a more classical one that does not use altitude information, showed a significant improvement in the quality of discharge simulated by the hydrological models. \nStarting from a very simple snow routine structure that we tried to complexify provided that the additions to the module would improve model efficiency, we ended up with a parsimonious (two free parameters) and general snow module, called CemaNeige. Tested on our catchment set, it showed better performances than five of the seven existing snow module tested as references. On the Swedish catchments, it also performed better than the two modules that showed the best performances on average on the total catchment set. However, CemaNeige can still be improved on mountainous catchments (France and Switzerland) where the lumped versions of the MORDOR routine outperformed CemaNeige. Also tested on an independent set of French catchments where the level of influence by snow is low, CemaNeige showed satisfactory results. Last, CemaNeige can easily be adapted for simulation on ungauged catchments, as it shows an acceptable level of performance with default parameter values.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
