A la croisée de deux champs d’études qui ont longtemps pu paraître antinomiques, cette thèse entreprend l’écriture d’une histoire de l’Afrique en science-fiction. Elle s’attache à montrer la présence significative de l’Afrique dans la science-fiction en tant que sujet et lieu de production depuis les prémices du genre. Elle vient ainsi contester et enrichir les canons de la science-fiction et de la littérature africaine, les ouvrant à de nouveaux horizons à partir d’œuvres parfois peu connues, sinon reléguées au second plan ou ignorées. Malgré des connexions avec l’afrofuturisme, cette histoire de l’Afrique en science-fiction s’en distingue, portant un enjeu spécifique sur les représentations du continent et de son avenir qui sont également étudiés à l’aide d’un corpus sélectif d’une dizaine d’œuvres. Elle défend enfin le recours aux ressources de l’imaginaire et de la science-fiction pour une approche originale des réalités du continent et pour lui rêver d’autres futurs, au-delà du stock d’images pessimistes et apocalyptiques souvent rattachées à l’Afrique.
