Au Québec, le genre « folklore » gagne en popularité au début du vingtième siècle, avec les premières veillées publiques, ou performances publiques, évoquant des rassemblements musicaux communautaires. Les veillées publiques étendent le répertoire du folklore et promeuvent le récit originel d’une musique qui aurait été apportée par les colons en Nouvelle France, où elle serait restée pratiquement intacte tout en absorbant quelqu’essence intangible du territoire. En s’appuyant sur la théorie des genres musicaux, et plus spécifiquement sur les travaux de David Brackett sur la citationalité, cet article pose les années 1919 et 1920 comme un tournant pour le folklore québécois, et les veillées publiques comme catalyseurs de ce changement. En tant que méthodologie décrivant l’émergence des catégories musicales, la citationalité permet d’analyser la tradition comme processus, tout en reconnaissant l’influence démesurée des récits d’origine dans la formation de ce processus. Cet article propose également une critique de la dichotomie entre « tradition inventée » et « tradition authentique » de Hobsbawm. L’article explore deux cadres d’analyse proposés par Mark Salber Philips, ici appelés « tradition-comme-origine » et « tradition-comme-processus ». En somme, cet article fait entrer le Québec dans les conversations académiques sur le mouvement du folklore en Amérique du nord et en Europe, et les veillées publiques dans les recherches sur la mise en scène du folklore au début et au milieu du vingtième siècle.
