Abstract
La pèdisyon est une maladie populaire dont sont victimes les femmes rurales et urbaines d’Haïti, et dont le traitement relève de la compétence des figures thérapeutiques traditionnelles. Cependant, lors des consultations médicales, de nombreuses femmes, parfois accompagnées de leur mari, parlent de cette maladie autodiagnostiquée afin d’y trouver une réponse concrète. Dans une société où la majorité des femmes ignorent les causes objectives de l’infertilité et de la stérilité, et où il faut avoir un ou plusieurs enfants pour être perçue comme une femme normale, il est permis de penser qu’un foetus dont le développement est bloqué par la nature ou par une force surnaturelle peut passer plus de neuf mois, voire des années dans les entrailles de sa mère. L’objectif principal de cet article est de décrire les représentations causales et thérapeutiques associées à la pèdisyon ainsi que les enjeux socio-psychologiques qui en résultent.
