Abstract
David Masson (1822–1907) was a leading academic literary critic and editor who wrote a six-volume biography of John Milton and the first book-length study of the novel in English. Born in Aberdeen, he was made professor of English literature at University College London in 1852 and went on to hold the Regius Chair of Rhetoric and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh for thirty years (1865–95). Masson was friends with leading writers and intellectuals, including Thomas De Quincey, J.S. Mill, Thomas Carlyle, and his former Edinburgh student J.M. Barrie (1860–1937), and combined scholarship with periodical reviewing and a decade-long spell as the editor of Macmillan’s Magazine (1858–68). For a long time, both north and south of the border, he held a place at the heart of Victorian letters.
