Abstract
Les objectifs sont classés en fonction de leur longueur focale, mais ils se caractérisent aussi souvent par leur provenance: nombre de cinéastes sauraient distinguer un objectif ordinaire de marque inconnue d’un autre portant la signature de Zeiss. Ce parcours soutient que les différences de qualité attribuées aux objectifs ont émergé au fil du temps et sont dans une large mesure le résultat du processus historique d’industrialisation qui s’est déroulé à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle. Ce parcours s’intéresse en particulier à la société Zeiss, qui a joué un rôle clé dans l’émergence de l’optique moderne. Les années 1890 à 1915 coïncidant avec les débuts du cinéma, nous verrons comment la société Zeiss a développé non seulement des objectifs, mais aussi un vaste marché et un ensemble de croyances relatives au fonctionnement et aux critères de qualité des objectifs de précision.
